Abstract

This talk will introduce the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Florida. The Department has grown to 54 world-class faculty and covers all areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Notable recent strengths include:

• Florida Institute for Cyber-Security (FICS) was formed five years ago and is now a world leader in topics ranging from hardware to software security.

• The Nelms Institute for the Connected World was formed last year to explore internet-of- things research in medical, transportation, manufacturing and other applications.

• Multi-functional Integrated Systems Technology (MIST) Center, an NSF-funded center, was formed also five years ago and is now a world leader in various smart sensors and integrated electronic systems technologies.

• The Center for Big Learning (CBL) became the first NSF-funded center in deep learning.

The ECE Department leads the college of engineering in research expenditures. This year the University of Florida is now ranked #7 public university in the United States.

Biography

John Harris is Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. Faculty hiring has been a major focus for Dr. Harris since starting as chair in August 2011. Under his leadership, the department has grown from 41 to 53 tenured/tenure-track faculty members in the last five years. The department has targeted several strategic areas including Cyber-Security, Internet of Things, Neuro-Engineering, machine learning and power systems. For his research, Dr. Harris leads the Hybrid Signal Processing Group in studying biologically inspired circuits, architectures and algorithms for signal processing. He has published over 200 research papers and patents in this area. Dr. Harris received his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1983 and 1986. He earned his PhD from Caltech in the first graduating class of the interdisciplinary Computation and Neural Systems program in 1991. After a two-year postdoc at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, he joined the faculty at the University of Florida in 1993.
