Merck Korea (Director Glenn Young) announced on the 24th that the award ceremony of the 17th ‘Merck Award’ and ‘Merck Young Scientist Award’ was held during the 2020 International Meeting of Information Display(IMID).
The Merck Award is a technology paper award established by IMID in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Merck’s liquid crystal research, to recognize outstanding scientific achievements in display technology. After an expansion to add the Merck Young Scientist Award in 2006, the award was changed into an academic award in 2013, which was the 125th anniversary of the discovery of liquid crystals.

Glenn Young, representative of Merck, Korea said, “Through collaboration with the academia and internal renewal, we will strive for the advance of science in not only business, but also novel fields such as bioscience and healthcare.”
SNU Professor Yongtaek Hong, who received the Merck Award this year, developed a flexible hybrid electronic technology based on printing processes He demonstrated the stable operation of flexible display, sensors, and electronic skin systems under extensive mechanical deformation and contributed to the field of flexible display and wearable devices.
Profesoor Hong stated that he would work on applying flexible electronics according to the current trends so that it can change future society.
The recipient of Merck Young Scientist Award is Professor Hyunkoo Lee in electronics engineering at Sookmyung Women’s University (Division of ICT Convergence Engineering). He conducted research in various fields including Liquid Crystal Display(LCD), Organic Light-Emitting Diodes(OLED), and Quantum dot Light-Emitting Diode(QLED). His work covered a wide range in OLED, including material, devices, circuits, panels, and optical simulation and contributed to both academia and the industry.
Professor Lee said that he would concentrate on aiding the technical development of future display technology.
