Welcome from the Chair

A global research-centered faculty
This is Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, SNU

Offering top-notch, research-oriented undergraduate programs, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) takes great pride in nurturing the creative minds of all students, equipping them with the global competences and expertise in electronics, electrical, and computer engineering. In 1992, in order to provide better service and more opportunities in various fields for students, the three departments of Electrical Engineering (established in 1946), Electronics Engineering (established in 1947), and Control and Instrumentation Engineering (established in 1978) were consolidated into what is now the Department of ECE.

Currently, there are 67 dedicated faculty members, more than 900 graduate students, and about 1000 undergraduate students studying and conducting research in the areas of power and electrical energy systems; communication, signal processing and electromagnetics engineering; robotics, automation, and control systems; display, laser, electrophysics, and optical engineering; semiconductor and circuits; computer hardware and software; embedded systems; and bioelectronics applications.

Korea announced its blueprint for being one of the G5 countries with the global impact in science and technology, based on 12 National Strategic Technology, which is categorized into three areas: Innovation Leading Area (Semiconductor, Display, Battery, Mobility, Atomic Power); Future Challenging Area (Bio, Space, Aviation, Ocean, Hydrogen, Cyber Security); Essential Founding Area (AI, Communication, Robot, Quantum).

In order to do research on such key enabling technology, professors and students perform top-notch research operating world-class facility and equipment in several core research centers of our department, such as Institute of New Media and Communications (INMC), Inter-University Semiconductor Research Center (ISRC), Automation and Systems Research Institute (ASRI), AI Institute of Seoul National University (AIIS), Seoul National University Electric Power Research Institute (SEPRI). The outstanding outcome from made several fellows in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), The National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) and The Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), editors of high-impact international journals, and chairs of major international societies and conferences.

Most of the undergraduate and graduate students of the department of ECE receive various scholarship benefits. Especially graduate students have opportunities of presenting their research at major international conferences and having internship abroad through the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) FOUR program. In addition to such economic benefits, psychological counseling for mental welfare is provided for the students at the Department Student Center where a professional counselor resides. Official dialogue with professors is more often provided for the undergraduate students for helping them determine their future careers.

The Department of ECE plays key roles operating programs of Combined Major in AI Semiconductor Engineering, Combined Major in AI Communications, Combined Major in AI, Semiconductor Specialized University, University of Innovation and Convergence in Next-Generation Semiconductor, Graduate Major in AI Semiconductor, Graduate Major in Future Vehicular Mobilities, Display Tracks and leads related other departments in professional training of students in areas of semiconductor, circuit, display, communication, automobile, AI, and etc.

We have led and will continuously lead top-notch research and raise outstanding scholars and engineers in the key areas of the National Strategical Technology.
