Prof. Kyomin Jung, IEEE ICDM 2021 10-Year Highest-Impact Paper Award (Newswire, 2021.12.16.)
Proposed a new algorithm for controlling the spread of diseases and specific information on social media
Selected as the IEEE ICDM paper with the most influence in the academia and society over the past decade
SNU ECE Professor Kyomin Jung
SNU College of Engineering (Dean Byoungho Lee) announced on the 16th that on Friday, December 10th, ECE Professor Kyomin Jung received the ‘2021 IEEE ICDM 10-Year Highest-Impact Paper Award’. IEEE ICDM is the top conference in the field of data mining.
This award is conferred upon a single paper published in ICDM in 2012 with the largest impact on society and academia.
Professor Kyomin Jung received this award for his first author ICDM publication in 2012, ‘IRIE: Scalable and Robust Influence Maximization in Social Networks’ (Co-author: Wooram Heo, Wei Chen). It was recognized for its impact in data-mining and social network analysis over the past decade.
This research paper proposed a novel, effective algorithm that accelerates information transfer when specific information or a disease is spread within the social network or society. Whereas conventional methods required considerable storage space and computational time, the proposed algorithm allowed much faster information transfer while enabling effective acceleration.
The results of this research later made a significant impact in viral marketing and the control of contagious diseases.
It is also expected to be applicable to issues such as deciding which groups of people should be prioritized in vaccination to inhibit the quick spread of contagious diseases such as COVID-19.
