“I simply placed a pebble on the monument of information communication”
Byung-Ki Lee invented a process for the conversion and compression of analog signals into digital signals, and developed a technique for framing information for optical communication. He devoted his time to establishing international-level information and communication infrastructure in Korea, and made great contributions to Korea’s rise to an information and communication powerhouse.

In 1997, he was elected as a fellow of IEEE at the youngest age among Korean scholars, and served as the chairman of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) for the first time as a person from the Asia-Pacific region. He was globally recognized for his achievements in the field of information and communications technology.

Emeritus Professor and an information and communications engineer Byung-Ki Lee is the main character that reached these heights. He achieved titles and goals that no one could imitate during the 30 years of his time in the academic field, and after the 30 years, he went back to his hometown right after his retirement. We interviewed him to listen to the works he made in the field of information and communications engineering, and to ask about the wise way to live while maintaining each individual’s self-identity in this technological era of perpetual change.
