Dear International Students!
Welcome to the College of Engineering at SNU, and welcome to Korea! We are very happy to have you at
our college, contributing to a growing international community on our campus and bringing in valuable
expertise and ideas from abroad.
Life is not always easy for international students; you are facing a different culture and a new language
during your stay at SNU. Especially in the beginning you probably have lots of questions related to your
studies at SNU and to your private life in Korea: how do I sign up (and cancel) classes, where can I get
health insurance, how do I tell the taxi driver to drive me home, and where can I find a cheap room?
The Korean Language Classes for International Students of the College of Engineering have been designed
to take the edge off the most urgent problems you are expected to face during the first few months here at
SNU. In the beginner class, you will both learn survival Korean and be introduced to Korean culture and
customs. The intermediate class teaches more advanced vocabulary and writing. The classes are also a
great opportunity to meet and make friends with other international students and to get to know our
excellent staff in charge of international affairs at the College of Engineering.
The classes take place twice a week for ten weeks from 7 to 9pm. Participation is voluntary; we hope that
many of you will take this opportunity and invest a little time to get to know this great country, its
language, people and customs, and the procedures at SNU a bit better.
You can sign up for the classes by filling out the attached application form and returning it to Ms. Heesun
Kim by email (kavkr@snu.ac.kr) or in person (room 212, building 39, tel: 02-880-8079). The classes are
free if you attend at least 80% of the lectures; otherwise the small sign-up fee will be used to cover
expenses for the class. If you are not able to pay the fee please let Ms. Kim know so that we can find an
individual solution.
Once again, welcome to the College of Engineering, and we hope to see you all on March 16th

Prof. Bernhard Egger
