Research Interest
He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and holds a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Seoul National University. His research bridges ophthalmology and engineering, focusing on neural interfaces, artificial vision, and bioelectronics. He has led projects on artificial retinas for the visually impaired, bacteriobots, and bladder stimulators. Professor Seo also serves as a research professor at SNU Biomedical Research Institute and heads the interdisciplinary program in medical informatics. He is an executive member of several academic societies. Leveraging his clinical experience, he pursues patient-centered research aimed at benefiting a broader population through the convergence of medicine and engineering. His main research area is the development of artificial retinas. Artificial retinas are designed to electrically stimulate the remaining visual neural cells in patients whose photoreceptors are damaged, enabling them to perceive light. Professor Seo’s team is developing new artificial retina devices that can operate in vivo for over 10 years, are easy to implant, and reduce surgical side effects. To overcome the limitations of existing devices, they use advanced materials and ultra-miniaturized circuit technology, and are working on customized designs tailored to each patient’s eye shape. This research aims to enhance the quality of life for visually impaired individuals and promote the practical application of artificial retinal implants
