■ Abstract

In this talk, I will review optical frequency combs and high-spectral-purity lasers. Recent advances in the high-finesse microresonator and low-loss waveguide technologies provide a new modality to produce a frequency comb based on cascaded four-wave-mixing (Kerr comb) and an ultralow phase noise microlaser, which facilitates compact/power-efficient, yet high-performance, integrable frequency synthesizer and clock systems for high capacity optical communications, optical interconnects, remote sensing, ADC and more.

■ Biography

Jinkang Lim is a senior research scientist in the Fang Lu Mesoscopic Optics and Quantum Electronics group at UCLA. He currently works on the mesoscopic optical resonators/waveguides for precision clocks/sensors and optical communication. His research interests include ultrafast/nonlinear optics, femtosecond lasers, optical clock/sensor, and precision measurement. He previously worked in the Research Laboratory for Electronics at MIT on high-power ultrafast fiber lasers and frequency combs for astronomical and optical communication applications under supervision of Prof.Franz Kaertner. He received a Ph.D. in Physics at Kansas State University with a contribution of all-fiber carbon-nanotube based femtosecond lasers and frequency combs and its molecular frequency metrology application.
