▶ Abstract: Heterogeneous integration of functional materials offers exciting new opportunities for advanced device platforms. In this talk, I will introduce the integration of compound semiconductors with 2D materials as a pathway for novel electronic and optoelectronic device applications.

I will first present ‘epitaxy on 2D materials’ and ‘layer transfer techniques’, which enable the production of freestanding single-crystal compound semiconductor membranes. 2D materials involved in the process are the key enabler for such epitaxy and layer transfer, and I will discuss novel physical phenomena in these 3D/2D heterostructures. Next, I will introduce new concepts of devices that can be achieved by these hetero-integration approaches. As a first example, I will show full-color microLEDs with the world’s highest pixel density achieved by vertical integration of RGB layers. Next, I will introduce ultrathin GaN-based wearable electronic skin (e-skin) devices capable of multi-modal sensing and wireless communication. Lastly, I will discuss future prospects of these technologies.

▶ Biography: Hyunseok Kim is currently a Research scientist at MIT. Before joining MIT, he received his B.S. and M.S. from Seoul National University in 2011 and 2013, respectively, and Ph.D. from UCLA in 2018, all in Electrical engineering. He worked on MEMS sensors for M.S. in Prof. Yong-Kweon Kim group, and III-V nanophotonic devices for Ph.D. in Prof. Diana Huffaker group. As a postdoc and a research scientist in Prof. Jeehwan Kim group at MIT, he led multiple projects on epitaxy-on-2D-materials and heterogeneous integration technologies, which enabled new electronic/optoelectronic devices and computing chips. His work has been published as more than 40 peer-reviewed articles in journals including Nature, Nature nanotechnology, and Nature electronics. He is joining UIUC as an assistant professor of ECE department in January 2024.
