Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced on the 28th that it selected three centers managed by SNU, POSTECH, and SKKU for the ‘system semiconductor professionals training program’.

The three centers will be each supported by a government budget of 9.6 billion won for up to six years to foster talents with Master’s Degrees or Ph.Ds specializing in system semiconductors – AI , IoT, and bio in particular. MSIT will select two additional centers next year and provide a total of 48 billion won to the five centers by 2025.

The selected centers aims to produce 335 experts with Master’s Degrees and 145 with Ph.D.s, which adds up to a total of 480, from this September to 2025. Students will build practical skills through corporate demand-based curriculums and chip-making projects.

An official from the MSIT said, "Strength in the system semiconductor field depends on the quality of the related personnel. These people should be able to meet the needs of multi-product customized products and set (finished product) companies."

Unlike memory semiconductors that store data, system semiconductors can store, calculate, and analyze. Central Processing Units (CPUs) for computers and Application Processors (Aps) for smartphones are typical examples.
